The Daily Examen is a five-part Quick Study series teaching the Ignatian prayer rhythm developed by Ignatius of Loyola in the 16th century. Each installment walks the reader through one of the five movements — Gratitude (receiving the day's gifts from God's hand), Awareness (asking the Spirit for honest sight), Review (walking back through the day noticing consolation and desolation), Response (confession, thanksgiving, lament as appropriate), and Hope (looking toward tomorrow with grace) — both explaining the movement and inviting the reader to pray it. The shape is intentional: the Examen begins in receptivity, moves into honest seeing rather than anxious introspection, observes the day with God rather than against the self, responds in real conversation, and ends forward-facing rather than in shame. The voice is contemplative, historically grounded, and accessible to Protestant and Catholic readers alike — honoring Ignatius's Catholic origin without requiring a Catholic framework. The series resists framing the Examen as self-improvement, productivity, or journaling: it is prayer, and that distinction is felt throughout. The tone is quiet, unhurried, and pastoral — not academic, not breezy — so that by the fifth installment the reader has not only learned the rhythm but has prayed it five times in sequence, and carries a practice they can return to nightly.

3. The Spiritual Dynamics of Thanksgiving Why does thanksgiving matter so deeply to the spiritual life? Scripture hints at several reasons. a. Gratitude anchors us in joy. Paul’s triad—rejoice, pray, give thanks—reveals an inner coherence. Joy is sustained by prayer, and prayer is nourished by gratitude. When we give thanks, our hearts are reoriented from scarcity to abundance, from fear to trust. Gratitude is not denial; it is declaration: “God is still good, and He is still here.” (See also Habakkuk 3:17–19.) b. Gratitude guards against pride and self-sufficiency. When we recognize every good thing as gift, we are humbled. We cease to measure life by what we have earned and begin to marvel at what we have received. This humility keeps our hearts tender before God and others (Deuteronomy 8:10–18). c. Gratitude generates generosity. Those who live in thanksgiving become conduits of grace. When we perceive life as gift, we naturally desire to share it. Gratitude fuels service, compassion, and open-handed living (2 Corinthians 9:11–12). d. Gratitude strengthens faith in trials. In seasons of loss or uncertainty, recalling past mercies becomes a lifeline. The memory of God’s faithfulness in yesterday’s storm enables trust for today’s unknowns (Lamentations 3:21–23). Gratitude is memory turned into hope. Reflection Pause: Which of these four dynamics do you most need to cultivate? Write a short prayer asking God to deepen that aspect of gratitude in you.
